Who do you Guys think is the best Author in the History of The World?

Of the choices, Joseph Conrad. I'll give you my two cents on each writer.

Dumas - Adventure stories. Nothing really deep or interesting.
Orwell - little more than anti-Communist propaganda. bears little relevance to today's political situation. Zamyatin and Huxley have aged better.
Homer - never read.
Woolf - pretentious James Joyce-ripping off. a stain on England.
Conrad - philosophically deep, well-written works that haven't dated a bit. a great writer.
Sinclair - not a great writer. he wrote only to further a cause, not for the sake of art.
Lewis - never read.
Twain - known as a writer of children's literature. decent in that sense.
Stevenson - Dr. Jekyll and My Hyde is his only good work. a one hit wonder.
Dickens - a good writer, but not as good as Conrad.

This is a pretty idiosyncratic list. Where the hell are Joyce, Hardy, Zola, and others?

Joyce IS the#1 writer of the twentieth century (according to the Modern Library -- the world authority on literature), which is more than any of these other authors recieved. Homer is the only comptition as far as I can see since Shakespeare was not included. Survey says: this poll is b-u-n-k: BUNK!

Did you even read my last post? And what does BUNK mean?

Relax . . . if you would have glanced at the banner on my post you would have noticed that my post came less than two minutes after yours. You were probably finishing yours as I began mine. Anyway, no hard feelings. Bunk is lay word for 'illegit'.

Where is the poll?

Shuai

This is what happened:
I started a poll with about nine authors.
Someone called it Bunk, so I tried to add more authors.
It wouldn't let me do that, so I got rid of the poll. I figured that having a disscusion would be better than a "bunk" poll.

The greatest writer ever is a matter of opinion. Isak Dinesen was brilliant.

So you say he was brilliant? that is a matter of opinion.

It's hard to say who's the best in the world unless you can read in every language. that said..if you want to go by who's been most read, performed, interpreted, studied, emulated etc, it would definatly be Shakespeare.

I would say first Moses for his Excellent books then About 5000 others are tied for secound place in my view such as Mohamed, Lao-Tzu, Homer and many others.

Well Chrissy, you have to realize that all the stuff worth traslating has pretty much been translated, so you really don't need to know more than one language. So, look at it from this point of view and decide who you think is the best.
Any votes for Dumas?

"Orwell - little more than anti-Communist propaganda. bears little relevance to today's political situation."

This statement has little or no logic or reason backing it up.

My personal favorite is a tie between Tom Clancy and Frank Herbert... however... these are not really ageless... nor are they extremely deep. I think Orwell could quite possibly be my answer... he has universal relevence. His fear of the inability to control his own life is a universal trait among humans. By the way... did you guys know that the site of Arrlington National Cemetary used to be Robert E. Lee's home and plantation? The screen name of an idiot made me think of that.

Where did I hear that the Civil War started in Lee's front yard and ended in the back yard? Or was it someone else?

Anyway, I second Dumas, though I like Victor Hugo too. I can't really decide on any favorite. It's kind of like working in a parfum store. I like a fragrance depending on the mood I'm in and the weather outside. ;)

speaking of the civil war, I heard a rumor the other day that a history book in a Texas middleschool was found to say that the South actually won the Civil War... man... I sure HOPE that isn't true... Isn't that weird? I wonder if Winston didn't write it...

Joyce, by such a wide margin that 200 years from now, everyone else will still be playing catch up.

And when history is written and they are tallying up the final score on these things....I'm still betting Joyce.

Indeed, considering Orwell was a communist, though of the libertarian variety. Remember that anarchism = libertarian communism/socialism. That book was anti-totalitarian, not anti-communist.

It has to be Shakespeare. In almost everything I read that was written after him, I sense his influence and ideas. For me, his commentary on the human condition has never been equaled. He may have been the greatest artist of all time.
