I like the book. Rosa Achmetowna is one of the bluntest characters I have read in quite a while. In a way many families have similar stories. Rosa, as the grandmother wrestles for control of her wild granddaughter (Aminat) full of mischief, from her daughter.

The novel is most interesting in that it is set partly in the former Soviet Union and gives great insight that we still surprisingly know very little about, in terms of everyday life.

The grandmother, daughter, and granddaughter move to Germany and the whole family begins to fall apart in a hilarious way.

Rosa is a brilliant character with no filter. Has anyone else out there read this book?

No, it looks like chicklit or something you would read with a book club.

Damn. You are correct. Had to read it for the book club. It's not chic lit - honestly.

Recommend something really masculine. The hens will love it! Hemingway or the likes...

I did! The reading list is pre pre-set for remainder if the year. It's pretty fair, we did "sun also rises". Alot of paulo coelho, and that sort of leaning.

Why is it the ladies love Paulo Coelho?

I stopped going to my book club, because they kept picking all theses dribble modern novels. I just don't have the time to read crap. LOVE Sun Also Rises, one of my favorites. Did they like it?

The club did love "Sun also rises"

Uum, good question! I'd say Coelho is into mysticism and blah blah. Also, he says things women like to hear. I can't think of anything one thing, I just know it when I hear it:cool:

But back to Tartar book. It really is good, it's not chick lit, I promise you. I would hate it if it was- the humour is dark and biting.

I'm reading Dracula, and I have a few others I want to read, so it may have to wait until the spring. I'll take another look, anyway.
Hope some one else can comment on the book. Sorry for detracting from your book discussion.
