Does anyone of you know how to make a square, in which I can type words? I was asked to translate some information about a fire bureau today. The original Chinese version has a great many squares, in each of which a few lines of words were printed. If I do not know how to make squares with Word97, I cannot continue with my work tomorrow. If I type the words in lines that go one after another, I am sure my work will look unrefined. Please teach.

You need a text box. Go to "insert" and then choose "text box". You can pull it around to suit the size you want.

Where can I get a text book and the word, insert? Are they above the word page?

I forget somewhat but I think you go to View, Toolbars, Drawing. Then on the Drawing toolbar there is a textbox symbol.

If you make a textbox you might have to adjust the outline. Personally, I would insert a square (there is also a square symbol on the toolbar), right click it, and insert text.

I am encountering problems again. How can I move on to the next page? I pressed the button enter over again, but I cannot go to a new page. What happened?

Circles and squares and circles and squares ...

In reality, however, squares as a shape do not exist.

Nor do circles exist, so there is no need bothering yourself over something imaginary.

... Solved both your threads "once and for all."

To start a new page in Word, press Ctrl-Enter.

To start a new page when you haven't finished the first one, just go to Insert and then 'Page Break'. A line will appear that ends the page where you put it and then you will be put on the next page. I think in Word 97 there is still an option for Insert 'New Page'. That works the same way, but has a different kind of line, I have never known what the difference was exactly .

If afterwards you want to add text before the page break, just go to the text before it and the break will move along. You can also delete it, but then the text you typed afterwards will be moved up. If you don't want to get into a panic...

By the way, if there are several squares next to one another, you could consider doing Insert and then Table with as many rows and columns as you like. Saves a whole lot of moving about.

Or, in order to make a square that is exactly as big as the paragraph or as the text, you could consider going to Format and then 'Borders and Shading'. So first type the text, select it with your mouse, then go to 'Borders and Shading' and then you should be able to select the right box, the right line width, even colour of that line etc. You can opt for 'whole paragraph' or for 'Text only'. 'Text only' will put a tight square around the text you have typed and selected, 'whole paragraph' will put a square around the text you have typed and selected, but the square will extend to the margins of the page.

If you do the latter, remember to always put an 'enter' behind the text you have typed and do not select it. Otherwise, if you want to go on typing the rest of your text, the whole will have a square around it, because Word thinks it should. Putting an 'Enter' behind it which you do not select will break the spell, so to say.

Have you got enough options for a square now? :D
