Hunger does strange things to otherwise peaceful souls.
It magnifies the agony of watching well-fed faces
go on their merry way, content with saying it's all under control.
Famine dims the vision, shrinks self-respect,
lowers its victim's will to resist, takes its captives down
down down, until nothing really matters
except getting those crumbs.
And the rich keep getting richer,
the fat keep getting fatter,
while most of us keep counting our ribs.
Once again it's being preached
there will be a chicken in every pot.
But take a step outside and look in our eyes:
humanity is dying.
