I remember reading this book when I was in High School; it was translated in Tagalog(the original text was written in Spanish) so that it would be more adaptable to the schools here in The Philippines.

Until this very day, this novel's message resonates through every nationalist's heart. And that message is the longing for Justice, Equality and Freedom. Because even today, the conflicts of Politics, Religious dogma, and Racial discrimination can still be felt amidst my country.

However this novel, along with its sequel El Filibusterismo, gives an inkling of what the oppressed has to do bring down the oppressor - and that is to transcend; to be better than what is known of your kind; to deconstruct the stereotype; and to strip down the colonial-mind and redefine one's self to form one's identity.

Pardon me, if it feels like I am propagating this book. But I do love this book so much that I would want every Filipino to read it.

Nice review. Sounds like a book with national message, but also a universal one as well.
