I always said that it was because in order to swallow the concept of a god you had to be completely ignorant, but that was always just to get a rise out of people.

I actually think that it was because when the genesis story was re-written for the hundredth time within the last couple thousand years or so, it was a good way to nip scientific inquiry in the bud because it blames analytical thought for all of the suffering of mankind (in the same way that it blames women, providing a systemic excuse for a society which opresses them).
