"According to doctors, therapists, and his ex-wife, Landsman drinks to medicate himself, tuning the tubes and crystals of his moods with a crude hammer of hundred-proof plum brandy. But the truth is that Landsman has only two moods: working and dead."

1. "According to doctors, therapists, and his ex-wife,": What does this imply about Landsman?

2. "Landsman drinks to medicate himself,": why does Landsman have to drink to medicate himself?

3. "tuning the tubes and crystals of his moods with a crude hammer of hundred-proof plum brandy.": I don't understand.

4. "But the truth is that Landsman has only two moods: working and dead.": I don't understand.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
