View Full Version : Your Dream House

Gosh, it's 3.30 am and I can't sleep. Anyway, today I was thinking about how my dream house would be. I'm very bad at description but I would want to dedicate one room for each form of art.
For example, one room would be dedicated entirely to movies. There would be posters of the movies that I really like (such as The Dark Knight, Lord of the Rings, Wall-E, Toy Story 3, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Mary and Max, Paris Je T'aime, etc.) There would be a big plasma screen TV (or however you describe it) and also a wide selection of movies since I'm bloody eclectic. Movie junkie alert C:
Another would be dedicated to books. I really want a huge library and also a staircase that I can use to reach books that are placed higher than my height. You know, like in those old movies where professors would live in mansions that contain these kinds of libraries. It is just damn awesome. :D I love a lot of different genres of books as well, and I'll be sure to put everything on the rack. IKEA may be able to help me with it. :biggrin5:
I haven't watched a lot of theatre productions; so far I've only watched Mary Poppins and Cats. I did watch some in my local area and they were decent. I would like to watch more Broadway performances. I'm watching The Lion King in a month's time and I'm sure it'll be a blast. There's Richard III coming in November (and ironically it's my literature text) but it's amidst my A levels so I guess it's not gonna work out. :P
A big room will also be dedicated to music. I watched High Fidelity and I love the concept of owning a record store. So much music to listen to! That room will be similar to a record store I suppose, even though I don't listen to that much music. I'm sure it's more eclectic than what most people hear, though. Within Temptation and HIGHLY hyper Japanese music in the same playlist just don't make sense to majority of the population. Indonesian music used to be really great as well but now it's mostly full of crappy bands. >>"
Shoot, I can't think of anymore forms of art because it's 3.40 am. I suppose in my kitchen I will have excerpts of quotes from poems and books lying around for me to read everyday. Digital art is also amazing and I miss doing it everyday. I'll probably hang my artworks on the wall. I'll be sure to make my room Gothic but it has a tinge of softness and mainstream-ness (if there's such a word anyway) in it as well.
Oh yeah, I think I'll also be dedicating a room for clothes (considering I'm very self-conscious and I care a lot about how I am perceived in public through my clothing). My fashion sense is not the best, but I definitely have a wide range of clothes in my wardrobe. I'm trying to change it because it kinda sucks and I used to be more boyish but now I'm trying to be more provocative. Both suit me pretty well I suppose.
Maybe there will be a room full of collages. You know, like a mad room or something, where there are like ripped pages of magazines which are stuck together and basically they become the floor and the wall of the room. It'll be pretty cool to find inspiration in that kind of room, ay, with all the craziness of the media bombarded into your head. :D
SOOOOO, tell me what your dream house would be like ;) I'll continue with this later after I've gone back from school later in the afternoon.

Three rooms, hidden away somewhere deep in the mountains and trees. A Fazioli grand in one, basic living necessities in the other (stove, desk, bathroom) and maybe an expensive speaker system as well, and in the third a personal library. I will sleep on the ground wherever I want to each night.
That's my "dream house," but it would also be nice to have a small apartment in the city for more sociable times ...

Ah lol so you want one dream house inside the mountain for relaxation and another in the city? That sounds good, but it'll be a hell lot of travel if it's so deep inside the mountains :P

My dream house would be someplace in Chicago, probably in an apartment, the 32 floor(!) ,with just one balcony to view the city ,one living room with a huge comfy couch, ton's of book lying on the ground,no phones no TV,alot of white sheets and pencils and pastels and brushes, And of course no kitchen!
Don't care about the details.

Haha. I actually wrote and recorded a song about my dream home!
If anyone's interested; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7eYcOo-_nHA
The song lists the things that would be inside, it's an interesting take. :)

No kitchen?! Man, I would love to cook if I had my own house XD

Lol I understand how that's like. I've always lived in big cities so it's really crappy when I have to listen to so much noise, especially when they come out from the mouths of people from some countries I don't really like. (I can be very racist and ironically my grandfather comes from there so my race is partly from that country as well :P XD)
Haha are you a female or a male if I may ask? I hate kids too :P

Hmm... I've always wanted, eventually, to live in something that didn't begin life as a house, like an old church, lighthouse or windmill. Something old with plenty of character, and in a nice costal setting by the sea.
As for inside, I like it homey and cozy. A nice lounge with a real fire and a good view, a quiet study for myself, a goodly sized kitchen. Every wall would be covered with bookshelves - it's going to be necessary! If it were something tower-like, I'd have a viewing platform on the highest part where I could go stargazing at night.
Gosh, I'm looking forward to it already!

Let's not turn Lokasenna's dream into a nightmare for him!
You know about huckleberries? When my brother comes to Idaho he's always looking for huckleberry beer because he can't find it in Oregon. I prefer Oregon's blueberries and blackberries. The wild blackberries of Oregon are soo plentiful and wonderful - like nothing you can buy. And the strawberries are farmed, but they have a high sugar content and don't hold up well for shipping. The farmers who grow those have just about gone out of business, I think. Berries now have to be made of rubber (and are grown in California) to last on store shelves. Honestly, I could almost move to Oregon just for the berries. (Oh well, ignore me, I've gone off topic again!)

My dream "house" is the inside of a tree, a large one like a redwood. Like the keebler elves. And I'm not joking. I don't really need anything more besides my guitar, everything else I desire would be supplied by simply being.

Very comfortably I should imagine. This particular mansion was sold to a Russian just before the recent economic crash for $750 million. It is now worth a great deal less although at the time, it was valued as the most expensive property in the world. It's set in a part of the French riviera that I have visited on a number of occasions and I think I could settle in very comfortably with its large staff to accommodate my every whim. It was originally built for Leopold 11 the King of the Belgians

That sounds like this small place in Sweden (if you read Harbour by John Ajvide Lindqvist you'll understand what I mean; I forgot what the place is called but it's similar to your description). :D

That's interesting, it reminds me of this guy who lives in a tree in Hullabaloo in the Guava Tree by Kiran Desai (I think the title is wrong but it's around there). Living in a tree would be fun for me but I don't think I can withstand solitude anymore these days. It's killing me.

I've been trying to think of what my mom has ever done for me - and I just remembered that she taught me how to make pies. I've never made huckleberry, but I can make a good raspberry, blueberry, blackberry, pumpkin, chocolate, butterscotch or my brother's favorite - strawberry/rhubarb - I'm sure I'm forgetting some. My brother Mark loves pie, so I'm nominated for this now. I will attempt a huckleberry pie for you Emil.

It's a date Emil! Whatever those drinks are sound good to me. Just please don't serve me any of that Quorn. That sounds so bad!
I've never had a vivid description of my dream home, but one thing I know, it's on rare occasions that people come in who are not my special people, and when people from my work have come by for some reason, it's a brief visit. I was reading recently on someone's blog, (I won't say her name) that she is this way, too - not letting just anyone into her home. And I'd never let someone's bratty kids into my house. Wherever my home is, however humble it may be, it is my castle... and certainly not a crash pad.

Yes I agree that Quorn doesn't exactly meld with the general ambience of the property but I'm sure the kitchen will hold an assortment of the finest food, for which I will select an appropriate red wine. Sauternes are dessert wines and should be an ideal accompaniment for your blueberry pie.
After the brandy and liqueurs have been served, you may disport yourself in the pool while I peruse the Almanac de Gotha to decide who to invite

Cool though having a moat would be, I would honestly have no idea what to do with most of the rooms.
It was like this when I was going around all those Russian imperial palaces a few weeks ago: first you'd have the Green Dining Room, which was next to the Blue Dining Room, which was next to the Amber Dining Room, which was next to the Oriental Dining Room, and so on... you'd spend half your life trying to find a use for each space, and just replicating needlessly.
Plus, I bet a house that size would be a bugger to keep clean!

Lokasenna described almost exactly the house I have dreamt of since I was 13, a lighthouse or an old windmill, but since there aren't that many choices in that range here on the ice I would settle for an old house with a lot of room for books and a study and a big garden for my dogs.
I actually have drawings of my dream house/windmill since I was a teen with bookshelves all over and big couches and armchairs.

I wish you posted more Helga. There's something about your posts that brings a calm over me.
And yeah, that cold house. I grew up in a large, very old house with only fireplaces, and usually no wood. I think we all learned to run around and flail about as a means of keeping warm. And then going to bed at night in a freezing bed and shivering! I was grown before I realized that flannel sheets existed!
