Helen’s Ring
“Robert, honey could you kill this spider for me? You know how afraid of spiders, your father is?” my mother yelled.
Robert replied “sure mom, when is Uncle Thomas’ party going to take place.”
“Next Saturday night, there are going to be plenty of young single women.” mom responded.
Robert replied “mom just because Helen left to go to Nashville, does not mean that she is not coming back. You know I love her, and that when she comes back, I am going to propose to her. Aren’t you the one always telling me that love is worth waiting for?”
“Honey, I know you really like her, but do you honestly think she is the one for you. She left you, and went to Nashville to work on her career. I want you to think about if you’re willing to put yourself through the risk of her not coming back. We know she is willing to put her career before you two being together.” His mother responded.
Robert said” I know she is the one for me because when she is with me I feel complete. She makes me a better person. I want to give her the world. I see us getting married, and having children, and growing old together. I know she is not perfect, but in my opinion she always will be. The way her nose scrunches up when she is disgusted by someone’s behavior. The way she looks when she is angry. The way she snores when she is asleep. She left with my permission mom; she had a chance to make it as a singer. I didn’t want to hold her back in life; I want what is best for her. In right now that is her being in Nashville. I don’t want her to resent me later for holding her back in life. She will either not make it down there, or I will move down there to be with her.”
“I just hope you’re not making a mistake. I just don’t want to see you heartbroken, you will understand one day when you’re a father.”His mother responded.
Robert responded” Mom, I know you don’t want to make a mistake, but I am not a little boy anymore. There are going to be moments where I am going to make mistakes, and you’re going to have to let me make them. All the mistakes I made in college led me to Helen, and I wouldn’t trade that for anything. If this turns out to be a mistake, I have faith that it will lead me to something better, and that I won’t end up regretting it. Now, mom I love you, and will see you next Sunday.”
“I know you’re growing up dear, I will try to sit back, and let you make your own decisions. If it falls apart I will be here to support you. Now, honey you should take some of the leftovers home with you. A growing boy needs healthy food to grow strong, and big. You’ve probably been eating too much fast food since you never did learn how to cook.” His mother responded.”
Robert said: “Mom, I am eating healthy meals, and yes, I will have some of the leftovers.”
“Here you go, honey” she responded as she handed him the leftovers.
“Thanks, mom” replied Robert as he walked out the front door.
Robert drove to his apartment in the light fog. The mist was clinging to his windshield; he couldn’t quite get it off completely. When he reached his apartment, he couldn’t help, but remember the time Helen twisted her ankle in the rain, and he carried her to the car, and then he carried her inside to their apartment. He had just opened the door when the phone started to ring.
Robert picked the phone up, and asked “Who is this?”
Helen answered “Robert, I just wanted to know how you are doing.”
Robert replied “I am doing well; I am applying for a higher position at NetApp. Apparently all those of years are starting to pay off. Now, how are you doing?”
“I am doing great, I have spoken with record producers, and they seem to really like my music. I hope you get the promotion. How are your parents doing?” Helen asked.
Robert said: “My parents are doing well; dad still spends most of his day tinkering away in the garage on his uncompleted projects. Mom spends most of her time in the kitchen trying out new recipes.”
“That is great, I miss seeing your dad’s expression when one of his projects malfunctions, and I definitely miss your mother’s cooking, and nothing beats your mother’s spaghetti. Helen responded.
Robert said: “next week, is going to be our first valentine’s day since we got together apart.”
Helen replied “I know, and I am very sorry we cannot be together. If there was any way for us to be together, I would take it.”
“It is not your fault that we cannot be together. We can just think about our love for each other. Remember last Valentine’s Day when nothing seemed to go right, my car broke down on the way to the restaurant. We ended up having to change the tire in the rain, and you fell down, and twisted your ankle. I had to carry you to the car, and we ended up not being able to make it to the restaurant in time. We laughed the whole way to the apartment, and I had to carry you inside. I laid you on the couch, and I got an icepack for your ankle. I ended up cooking you spaghetti, while you rested your ankle. Everything might have not gone as planned, but it was still one of my favorite moments because we were together.” Robert responded.
Helen replied “I still wish we could be together. That is also one of my favorite days, sometimes the best moments are when everything goes wrong, and someone comes along, and makes it better. I will be thinking of you, and your love for me, and that will be enough for me knowing that I have someone to come back to.”
“Knowing that I will see you soon, is enough for me to. I know that having someone come along makes things better, you came along, and things have been nothing, but better. I am sorry, but I have to go, I have to be at work early in the morning. I love you, and I will talk to you soon.”Robert responded.
“I am glad that I make your life better, you also make my life better. I also have an early morning tomorrow. I love you, and I will talk to you tomorrow.” Responded Helen as she hanged up.
Robert was started awake the next morning, by the loud ringing of his phone. He picked it up, and asked “who is it?”
His mother asked “Robert, honey I was wondering if you could make it to dinner tomorrow night?”
Robert replied “Mom, I should be able to make it.”
“That’s great honey, I am glad you can make it. Have you heard from Helen?”His mother asked.
Robert replied “yes mom, she called last night. She is doing fine. Our relationship is still going on strong.”
“I am glad that your relationship is going fine for now, but you do realize there are plenty of girls out there who would be willing to go out with you.”His mother responded.
Robert replied “mom, you know I am with Helen, and that she is the only one I want to be with.”
“Honey, I was just reminding you, so you could keep your options open.”His mother responded.
Robert replied” I know you’re just trying to help, but you have to accept the fact I am with Helen. Now, I have to leave to work soon, and I need to get ready. I love you, and I’ll see you tomorrow.”
“I love you to honey, I’ll see you tomorrow night.”His mother responded as she hanged up the phone.
The next night Robert arrived at his parent’s house. He walked inside the house, to find that the next door neighbors had been invited over with their single young daughter.
“Oh hi dear, I am glad you could make it. It has been awhile since we’ve seen Alisha, so I thought would be nice to invite the Kesinger’s over for dinner. This was the only night they could come over.”His mother explained.
Robert replied “that’s good mom.”
Mrs. Kesinger asked” Robert how have you been doing? What have you been doing in your life?”
Robert replied “I have been doing fine. I am working at NetApp, and I am applying for a higher position.”
Robert’s mother informed them that” dinner is ready. Robert honey, did you know that Alisha is an English teacher at the local high school.”
Robert replied” no, I didn’t know that she is a schoolteacher. You must be proud of her Mr. and Mrs. Kesinger.”
Mrs. Kesinger informed them that” we are very proud of her. It took a lot of time, and effort, but it was all worth it. Now, Robert your mother told us that you’re dating a girl named Helen.”
Robert replied “we have been going out for two years now. She is currently in Nashville, trying to make it as a country singer. When she comes back I will ask her to marry me.”
Mrs. Kesinger said” I am so happy for you dear. I hope everything works out for you.”
After an hour of talking to his parent’s, and their guests, dinner was finally over. After his mother pushed leftovers onto him, Robert was allowed to leave for his apartment. As he opened his apartment he heard the phone ringing.
Robert picked the phone up, and asked “Who is this?”
Helen answered “Robert, I just wanted to know how you are doing.”
Robert replied” I am doing great. I just got back from my parent’s house; they had the next door neighbors over for dinner.”
Helen responded” that is great, I am glad you able to spend time with your parents. I bet your mom pushed more of her leftovers on you.”
Robert replied” You know my mom; I never eat quite enough in her eyes.”
Helen responded” I am glad to hear from you. I love you, and miss you. I need to go; I have an early day tomorrow. I will talk to you later.”
”I love you to, and it is great to hear from you. This is the favorite time of my week, when you call me. I look forward to the moment I can see you again. I also have to get up early tomorrow morning. I will talk to you later. Robert replied as he hanged up.
Later that week on Saturday night, Robert arrived at his Uncle Thomas party. He had just walked into the house when he saw his uncle.
Thomas asked him “how are you doing?”
Robert replied “I am doing great. How are you doing?”
Thomas responded “it has been tough ever since my wife died, but the families support has made it easier. How are you and Helen doing? Did you know that the two of you remind me of me and my wife when we were young?”
Robert replied” I am glad that our support has made your lost easier to bear. It has been hard not being around her, but I find myself loving her more than ever. I just hope we will together as long as you did together.”
Thomas responded” I hope you, and Helen is together as long as we were.”
His mom came up behind him, and asked” honey, how are you doing?”
Robert replied” I am doing great. How are you doing?”
His mother responded” I am doing great. Did you notice that there are a lot of single ladies here?”
Robert replied” mom, you know I am with Helen, and that she is the only one I want to be with.”
“Honey, I was just reminding you, so you could keep your options open.”His mother responded.
Robert replied” I know you’re just trying to help, but you have to accept the fact I am with Helen.”
His mother was distracted by one of the guests, and he was allowed to go enjoy spending time with family, and friends. After about an hour later, he decided it was time to leave. After all tomorrow, he had to be at work early in the morning. As he opened the door, he noticed the light was on. Also, there was a person sitting on the couch. As he got closer, he noticed it was Helen.
