I remember my history professor talking about samurai in class and to give us an idea of the difference between the ideal of the samurai and what life actually was like he recommended two books. One was Hagakure which was the book about samurai ideals but I cant remember the title of the other one, which seemed much more interesting. I vaguely remember him talking about it, but I think it's written as a diary from a samurai living sometime (I don't know when) in japan, and his experiences fighting, drinking, being a loanshark, visitng prostitutes etc. I'm not completely sure but I think it's a diary and it was translated so its not a novel per se, but I was wondering if anyone might know about what I'm talking about.
