In the introduction to my edition of Kosinski's "The Painted Bird," Kosinski states:

"...he (unnamed Eastern European author and critic) warned me that I (Kosinski), like another prize-winning novelist who had betrayed his native language for an alien tongue and the praise of the decadent West, would end my days by cutting my throat in some seedy hotel on the Riviera."

Does anyone know to whom this refers?

Incidentally, "The Painted Bird" is one of the most brutally poetic books I've ever read. I'd recommend it to those who aren't faint of heart.
