Choke

the puppy smiles and bites

the hand of his master.

dewclaws gouge happily, unknowingly.

the hands retaliate and the puppy

squeaks like one of its toys

his face pinkens as his ears

thud against the carpeting

again and again.

his eyes are just baby rattles.

i watch the two

locked into place

and wish so ardently

that the future was somehow

less predictable.
