Spinning and churning and whirling away
The machine from another galaxy arrived today
It clunks and it shakes as its lights flash on
In random sequence - but it won't take long
It's purpose as it thumps might not be certain
But its functions are Boolean, and definitely hurtin'
My ears as it slowly comes to life in a miraculous way
And fubbles and schroombles and grumbles into play
The turning plate scrapes slightly out of whack
Or so I think as the grinding screech metallic
Emitting sparks, and smoke, even flames in places
As it reaches fever pitch and my heart races
Suddenly the bell rings and a siren goes off
Since its lid it flips as though its hat it doffs
Two large globes like wide open eyes blink in turn
But thoughout the house the sharp stink of burn
A mysterious tray opens and begins to chatter
Like an enormous mouth, as the cogs' teeth shatter
And some springs spring out and bounce off the ceiling
(And the walls and the floor) so much noise it is dealing
The fanbelt connected (too loosely I thought)
Between a pair of rollers as purchase it sought
Regardless of reason it began to flap
And then with a Thwang! it unexpectedly snapped
But the monstrosity commences to hiccup and jolt
I slide slowly forward believing an electrical fault
There should be an OFF button somewhere around
But there wasn't an ON so my confusion confound
It vibrates into a frenzy, and wobbles and lolls
Then it hops and it jumps, and wonkily rolls
Into the kitchen and suddenly explodes
Into component bolts and nuts, ball bearings and diodes
What was that about? I wondered quite sad
And then I see something that made me feel glad -
This wasn't the machine that I thought I had ordered
Just its packaging case before it imploded
Programmed to self-deconstruct upon arrival
Ensuring its safe intergalactic postal survival
So far advanced are these extraterrestrials
Considered everything - all the whistles and bells
Beneath the rubble on the lino a tiny black box
With a switch on its side with which it unlocks
An Alien Space Age Cosmic Device - such ingenuity
All miniaturised and reduced to elegant simplicity
So what of this switch of which I must flick?
I do so and receive a satisfying click!
A voice from within instructs me to take it outside
It unfolds and transforms - and I'm off on an outer space ride
In my shiny new sleek TurboThruster 1200
With this vehicle between stars I have thundered
'Eat my space dust!' I shout into the void
'A million lightyears per atom, with personal android!'
