Orb like sun descends
flies, bees, birds take no notice -
dark clouds overhead.

Finally the moon
rises with no man in it -
a yellow half globe

I can see the hare
leaping: his long ears streaked back -
toad is absent though.






Author notes:

Where the Western eye sees ‘The Man in the Moon’ the Chinese see a magical hare & a toad in the full moon. If you look carefully you can see the hare quite well, the toad however is not so easily discerned. In a half moon you cannot see him at all.

I really like this but I think I'd use a hyphen in Orb-like. A nice minimalist piece which reflects it's oriental inspiration.

Thanks, I think that you're right about the hyphen. I had one there originally, but I didn't think it looked right for some reason.

I don't know why but I thought of toad of toad hall - of course he was absent - he was in prison....

Yeah, that's what happens when you roll a petrol station. Throw away the key I say!
