I was wondering if anyone has read Leonardo Sciascia, Carlo Lucarelli, Andrea Camilleri, Niccolo Ammaniti or Gianrico Carofiglio? I was having a look at Amazon the other day and I'm amazed at the number of Italian crime writers available in English.

Leonardo Sciascia is, of course, a classic, although I admit I've never read one of his novels. I've watched a few of the movie adaptations, however, which were well served by some of the finest directors Italy in the '70s. If you can ever watch Francesco Rossi's Exquisite Corpses, don't miss the chance.

I have read Lucarelli's Almost Blue, in Italian back at the University, and my Italian wasn't good enough to fully understand it then. It seemed like an old-fashioned giallo, which is always interesting. I'm more curious about reading the De Luca trilogy, about a police investigator working in Mussolini's Italy and in the postwar years, mixing politics with crime. I personally find intriguing the premise of a good cop trying to do his job in a Fascist state, it should offer all sorts of dramatic possibilities.

What about you? Have you read any of these names?

American or Italian/American writers do ala Mario Puzo? I love French noir movies so i'll look for some Italian crime movies.
