I would know your soul
concealed in any skin.
I look for you, love,
beneath baseball caps,
shades, braces, tattoos…
I will find you
perhaps as a pink baby
perched in a shopping cart.
My eyes will meet yours;
you'll reach for me with grasping starfish hands.
I will gasp and you will coo,
it's you, it's you, I know it's you…
or I will discover you, finally,
moldering in Shady Acres Senior Home,
furrow-faced and foggy.
I will kneel beside you,
placing hands over gnarled knuckles,
whispering, "It's me."
So little, so late
but I will spend this life
and the next
summoning you again.

Its a v.beautiful poem. I like it especially its ending:
"I will spend this life
and the next
summoning you again." :-)

The 1766 in the title threw me slightly - I was thinking the Declaration of Independence but didn't that come 10 years later??
But it's a poignant piece of poetry about never-ending love.

The 1766 threw Hillwalker "slightly"? He must be a very weighty chap, in that case. It hurled me to Google...where I found nothing that elucidated it, but what a clean, unblemished declaration of karmic (?) love!

Yes, it did actually start out as 1776 but then I realized that year might cause historical confusion, so I had to settle for the more generic year of 1766.

EA, I like it :D
''My eyes will meet yours;
you'll reach for me with tiny starfish hands.
I will gasp and you will coo,
it's you, it's you, I know it's you…'' cute hahaa :D

This is a really sweet poem. Behind the sticks & spiky heels of that embittered housewife persona you sometimes project, you're just an old softie at heart. An incurable romantic. Good for you :)

Holy molasses. That was powerful.
I loved the entirety of it, such a beautiful emotion so concisely displayed...
Kudos to you,
in loving kindness,

i think you captured much in little here every, though the title left me mystified also, perhaps adding to the strength - especially in such a short piece - it is so self-contained that any title would probably be superfluous
Good job! :)

Hm, everyone is hung up on the title. It was just intended to be the year that N met this man for the first time, and she's been looking for him ever since, or until the present. Is that unclear?
@Hawk: of course I'm a softie! And believe it or not, I love being a housewife... about 85% of the time, at least :) Poetry makes quick work of the remaining 15% so it doesn't spill over into "real" life.
