Now I have always been curious about the written sounds that animals make in other languages.

For example in English a dog goes Woof Woof but in Holland I've been told they go Vuff Vuff.

Anyone care to add? Dogs, cats, sheep, cows - anything. I would love to read their written sound!

My landlord goes: 'Bloody artists!' while it's chopping all the branches off trees

(I think it's something to do with calling it a D's H - though that may not be the best term as I hear both these can be useful, even in combination)

(also it should be in a zoo as a nursing home's too good for it - but then it would ruin the ambience of menagerie)

(I can't think of where best it would fit - in a box perhaps?)

In Spanish a dog goes "guau, guau" (pronounced the same as English "wow" but with a "g" at the beginning). Also, a "guau guau" is used as a noun in babytalk, as an equivalent to the English "doggy"

And small birds go "pío, pío" (pronounced PEE-aw) ... would that be a "cheep cheep" in English?

And cows go "mu" (pronounced as English "moo").

I seem to remember from my school French that a cockerel goes cu-culee-coo. Please correct me if I am wrong.

It is a testimony to my language skills that I can remember this but not the forms of the verb avoir...

Finnish is pronounced the same way it's written, so it shouldn't be too difficult to read these out loud :)

In Finnish dogs say "hau hau" (pronounced like "how" in English) or sometimes "vuh vuh" (which is closer to the "woof", though not exactly the same).

Cats say "miau", which is basically the same as "meow".

Horses say "iihahaa", cows say "ammuu", pigs say "röh röh", chicken say "kot kot kot", roosters say "kukkokiekuu", sheep say "mää mää" or "bää bää", ducks say "kvaak kvaak", cuckoos say "kukkuu" and owls say "huu".

That's all I was able to come up with this quickly :D

Looking through my 1941 Peterson Field Guide to Western Birds, I see that the Black Capped Chickadee's sound is described thus:

"A clearly enunciated chick-a-dee-dee-dee or simply dee dee dee"
I am curious to know how that would be described in another language, such as French for example.

Very interesting! In Hindi a dog goes 'bhow bhow' which is similar to English 'wow wow', a cat says 'miau', a cow goes 'baa', a goat says 'may may', and little birds like sparrow go 'chin chin'.

I remember from an old Japanese textbook that when a dog barks it's 'wan wan'.

I heard that Finnish is a unique language, with different roots than all the other languages of Europe with their indo-european origins.

I heard that Hungarian also doesn't relate to the language groups around it. There was a study by a bloke - orgot his name and when - that found some correllation with Hungarian and Tibetan.

Was it that bloke who found some correllation between Finnish and Basque?

Actually, Finnish and Hungarian languages are related (they both belong to Finno-Ugric language family), though so remotely that they don't sound alike at all. The grammatical constructions are somewhat similar, though. The language closest related to Finnish is Estonian. But since Finnish is not an Indo-European language like most others spoken in Europe, it is very different from almost all other languages.

I've seen on tv that pigs in other parts of the world and in other provinces are supposed to say "oink," but where I come from they just say "snort."
