View Full Version : Where to Look

In the gullet of the frog-song
or the chirping of the crickets;
In the face of the moon,
who breathes in
the whole night sky like
pristine water-

- that's where to look-

In the ash of a warm hearth or
inbetween Django's plucked notes-
In the fresh cut grass
or the maple syrup morning's
golden yokes;

Look there-

- but never at night,
never too far along the roadside,
where I, heading north,
sleep against a motorcycle tire.

One of your best Jack - an evocative portrait of a summer's night on the prairie or desert fringes perhaps.

Wonderful turnaround at the end to what I was afraid was going to be too faux-naive a poem.

The peace and comfort of home is contrasted so sharply with the image of someone trying to escape it... which makes the reader wonder (in a good way) why someone who would speak so fondly of those places would run from them? Thought-provoking.

Sorry, I've made a mistake. I was supposed to start a new thread for my poem. Hope you won't mind. Thanks.

It's no problem. For some reason it happens a lot to this writer, specifically...

It is unique and I like the free reign of imagination portrayed here and the ending is a lovely turnaround as Prince commented JoH

I love this poem Jack, but you don't need a second hyphen before but at the beginning of the final verse, and I'd be inclined to cut the second never:

"Look there-

but never at night,
too far along the roadside,
where I, heading north,
sleep against a motorcycle tyre."

Hawk, thanks for reading and offering sound advice. You're a ferocious poet and a good compass.
