Oh I hate an intro to a poem as much as you do but I have not long arrived home to find my wife, children and plenty of furniture have gone out of the blue. So as a so called poet there is nothing else to do but unquit smoking and write in an empty house.

Tried that it didn't pan out. So here instead is something I posted July last year:

Its better to have loved and lost
than to have never loved at all
What kind of unloved twat
Ever thought that
was true at all.

I'm with you on this one. I have plenty of exes I wish I'd never met in the first place.

did they help you make better choices or just give you more baggage to drag around?

First of all, my sympathy.
However, like so many, you have that bromide wrong. It is actually a reflection on the issue of relative height in relationships, i.e.:

'Tis better to have loved a short man
Than never to have loved a tall.

And apropos of Prince's alternative axiom above, there
is also this one:

" 'Tis better to have loved and lost --much better!"

Lose your horse and you'll never go to the war (they used to say that over here).
