View Full Version : Lightning Man

Walking whilst it's stormin' our autistic Norman
Can't sleep and so decides upon a morning stroll,
A fork from up above which also fries a dove
Strikes, zapping his lobes; drops him like a wet ragdoll;

On waking he will utter (though with newfound stutter)
"I feel strange: electricity surging through my veins";
But first he must deep sleep, swirling patterns of light reap,
Sparking pulses, explosive power - electric brains!

Now he has awakened - found the charge for to bake
And grill and roast and also even microwave;
Bolts exit his fingers, index, middle, ringers,
Pinkies and thumbs: power all Superheroes should have;

So he spends a second on a name, and I reckon
That The Lightning Man was the first to come to mind;
Not an electrician, he thought "With this emission
I am the opposite, and have a mission to find";

Considered brief the circus but anything that'd irk us
Would likely irk him just as well - so that was dismissed,
And then the thought struck him, like a speeding truck inside
His head - his thoughts were racing - no time for a list;

But this: "I'll just use my electrons and I'll choose my
Vocation on the way! No need for rash decisions!"
Alone in a cozy park, a lone nosy parker
Watched our hero exploring his new emissions;

As quick he discovered, and also uncovered
New uses for his electro-magnetism,
Which repelled, or attracted, never get distracted
A thought could switch to anti-magnetism;

But the interloper emits a curse improper
As spying through his bush he sees a parkbench fly;
Norman turns of a sudden, and with a sort of shudder
Nails the poor bastard to a tree from on high;

He didn't mean to do it, the start made him skew it
Off course - but there was still much to learn of this skill;
It was just too tragic - mere seconds had he magic,
Already a nuisance and a mischief - a bitter pill!

"What to do?" he wondered, "Can't believe I've blundered!"
But he supposed he should at least attempt first aid
'Cause but for the grace of God went he, but: "Huh - that's odd!"
He swore he saw him there in the bushes afraid

As the parkbench zeroed in toward him, our hero
Didn't know where else to search or even look - gone!
"So that's okay", he reasoned "'cause no crime this season,
Damn, but he's where!" but the sneak from afar watched on;

Little did poor Norman know or even suspect the flow
Of liquid beneath his feet was in fact Water Man
Who can before your eyes boil, ice, steam, thaw, vaporise
To any H2O form: "Time I oughta ran!"

Like a river he meant - a wild raging torrent,
Before his secret identity was revealed;
Not that he need worry but better safe than sorry -
Had their forces met he may have become distilled;

Was this Newcomer on his side? Best to err on
The side of caution - good or bad, who cares? Beside
There had been no formal introduction as normal -
First time Superpeople meet, do worlds collide?

Spilt, not split, did Water, not fast be his fortune:
A bruised and slightly broken floppy puddle
Far from hero status - a molecular lattice
Which didn't quite fit together - a jumbled muddle,

Half water, half steam, half ice - a gurgling mass not nice,
But on his way a thirsty dog first sniffs, then slurps,
Then pisses upon a post, streetlight, hydrant, letter box;
Water is all over the place - and the dog but burps

The Lightning Man meanwhile, practices his style,
Until he becomes first adept, then Grand Master -
He can scale a tree by aiming reverse gravity
(Or something), a sure technique to thwart disaster

Not necessarily for the greater community
But himself (figures that there may be a villain -
Equal? Superior? They may be inferior,
Just in case he needs to escape, spirit willin')

In the future weeks he'll work at his craft until
It becomes an Art honed to smash Mr Criminal;
He'll pledge an oath and vow to fight injustice now,
And rearrange the furniture (exertion minimal)

lol. I don't usually apply myself to long poems but yours Mr are always worth the read. As well as wit, you also tell a story. When are your selected works getting published btw?

Thanks Delta

Soon actually, a collected poems, which this time last month or any previous I hadn't even considered - weird, huh?

There are many more adept and accomplished poets in this place who should be publishing, and in the age of the e-book there's just no excuse not to, especially if poetry is your calling - for me it's just a hobby while I'm watching a movie or listening to music

So yeah - I'm thinking of calling it Pokes And Other Pokery ('cause I thought it'd be funny :) ) but I haven't decided yet, and I don't think I'd buy it if it was called that...

Looking for a title? - 'Jiggery-Pokery' might sound better...

MM. You make me feel I have no imagination but more than that you make me feel like I no longer have the imagination I used to have that against all odds you have held on to.

You've got plenty imagination JB - you just need to minimise unhappy distractions

I get into a happy place with a full tummy, favorite movie or music, and then just hastily scrawl down ideas, hammer them into shape over one or two nights, and sit on the 'finished' pome for a week - re-read it, see all the errors before anyone else does, comb them out (so to speak) and hang the paper in the rain for all the excess to run off

That's all...

Thanks for reading it JB

Hillwalker: :ciappa: Ah! Still can't seem to find the word 'ciappa' no matter how many times I've froogled for it :(

Ah... I'm bamboozled also. It's a fairly common Italian surname so possibly the smiley was designed by some guy named Luigi Ciappa.
