The afternoon air is hot and still.
I'm mummified in Egyptian cotton sheets.
I lie rigid as the cat paces upon my stomach.

He enters, asks if I'm planning to get up today?
I've been in bed since Monday
and see no reason to leave.

My face is blank as a death mask.
He sighs, leaves.
I practice not breathing
as the cat settles like a Sphinx.

You really should think about getting a water bed, best sleep you'll ever have!

I love your connection to self-preservation, mummification and depression here EA.

Hi ea: I would cut the lines referring to "he"

"The afternoon air is hot and still.
I'm mummified in Egyptian cotton sheets
and lie rigid as the cat paces upon my stomach.

I've been in bed since Monday
and see no reason to leave.

My face is blank as a death mask.
I practice not breathing
as the cat settles like a Sphinx."

The "he" character (and his input) just distract from the essential poety. Love it like this.

"He enters, asks if I'm planning to get up today?"

The ugly reality. Thank goodness for the cat, the only good thing left. Perhaps the only good reason to get up is to feed the cat. You expressed the deep sinking self annihilating depression so deceivingly, beautifully and cuttingly here.

Succinct and poignant, makes one's plexus ache.
