View Full Version : Countryside Literature
Hi,
Could anyone provide me with a list of books similar to The Woodlanders please?
Something nostalgic but more upbeat.
Thanks

Ive not read the Woodlanders, but, for books with a nostalgic flavour, in which the countryside and country dwellers are core themes, rather than mere background:
Henry Williamson's "Flax of Dream" series and others
Horace Walpole's "Rogue Herries" etc
Laurie Lee's ....
Marcle Pagnol's ...

You could try more of Hardy.
Far from the Madding Crowd has lots of country folk in it and so does Tess of the D'Urbervilles. The Mayor of Casterbridge less (also didn't like it so much, it was as if it was severely shortened, I also found that Farfrae language became much more English than Scottish by the end. Not so much care was taken anymore to make him sound different on paper) and Jude the Obscure also less, but nonetheless good. Though I think it need a bit more Hardy to get it.
ot really many suggestions I'm afraid.

Don't know if it is what you're after, but for ruralism I would pick Knut Hamsun's Growth of the Soil...
