I would have to come out and say as a 31 year old fan of H.G. Wells that War of the Worlds is by far the best book ever written in the science fiction realm. HOw anyone could describe this as boring is beyond me. Wells sets his book in such a realistic setting that you can't help but feel drawn into his world. I can sympathise with someone whos modern sensibilities may not let them get into the time and place of his book but honestly I think he writes it in such simple there and now terms that if you can't feel for the characters or feel part of the time then you are reading the wrong book. <br>Indeed, the section where the martians eat the humans is tension writ on an epic scale. For this reason, I think WOTW is definitely one of the greatest books ever written. It is my favourite book by far, and I am not really a big fan of fantasy or science fiction, but this is the best book I've ever read in terms of setting and placement. Wells simply wrote of his own time and didn't try to be too clairvoient.
