Those identiy cards without a photo
scan barcodes and let us through.
Some chip wedged in plastic knows enough to communicate
with Security Mainframe that we may pass in peace.
No signature required. No paperwork.
Everybody is 'wired' from birth and registered.
I bought my Granny's gift through internal intracom scanning.
My Granny grumbles so loudly I can hear her
through my earpiece as I finalise the transaction.
She is a bit difficult but most oldies are.
Why does the government even lets us have hands?
I can't help but smile at the old dear and I voice activate
a tray of tea on Royal Doulton with old shortbread to lift her spirits.
You say to validate oneself, but it isn't the same you know.
Old people can be so dim. Get with the times I say
but her creased face droops like the tatty folds of her robe.
According to her, I'm missing the point.
I read literature history at a time when it was freely available.
About the abolition of paper books? The Micro Archive Movement. Not again!
They had buildings called libraries back then, open to the public.
It's all she talks about these days and I'm thinking
it might be prudent to power down the her chip implant slowly.
She really is getting worse as the past becomes her closest friend.
We've been through this futile talk too many times for my comfort.
I give her the Complete Bard Code of Classics with a perfunctory kiss.
she tosses the plastic disc to the ground in disgust.
I watch in shock as she manages to gouge the main chapters
That tough old bird renders a pricely collectible completely worthless.
Get out! Get out! she weeps, shouting I was taught for nought
but I admire her empty bookshelf, and pray she will one day see
nothing but hopelessness in her dusty, barbaric upbringing.
The Complete Bard Code's great work is destroyed
so I leave her there with her imagined tea and shortbread
to digest what she has just done.
The family tree chip codes examine her functioning levels.
The diagnosis is not good but I keep my chin up.
After all, Granny always told me, Be Prepared.

Old age used to seem so far away. Beautifully written Delta and god forbid I should ever rock any boats ;), but aint it a short story?

yeah probably it is a short story. I'm about to go back to work after 4 weeks and am a bit nervous. Can't remember my security codes or nothing.....arrrrgh!

You're a great help. I'll imagine the Commissioner naked too for good measure.

Cool Delta - it does have a story quality to it. Curious. what came first - the poem or the picture?

Like Jerry said, it's a story really and not worthy of a poetic review. An old lady showed me an Arthurian Tarot pack yesterday and I pulled the Bard card and it got me thinking about barcodes etc etc....
