The usual approach to the proverbial selection of "desert island books" or "desert island discs" is to allow the individual the choice of his or her favorites works from any artist(s) and any genre. It seems that the recently begun thread is little more than still another attempt at arguing for the "genius" of John Lennon and the Beatles. So lets start another thread and let us see your choices of 10 Desert Island Discs for each of the following Genre:

(No box sets unless it is a single unified work)

Classical
Opera
Jazz
Blues
R&B
Pop/Rock
Country/Bluegrass
Folk
Rap/Hip Hop
Metal/Techno
World Music/Ethnic
Other

(Ignore any of the categories that don't interest you). I might prove interesting to see what individuals here admire from a range of musical genre. Since I began this, I'll go first:

This isn't the "true" DIDs. You only get 8 records in total, (and they aren't usually, if ever, if I recall correctly, a whole album, but just one favourite record) plus one luxury item. So perhaps your format is to promote many more of your favourites Luke :brow:. I have nothing against that, but it's not DIDs. Perhaps it should just be retitled under another favourites list?

Yes, it's eight singles only and it's hilarious when ageing politicians, pandering for the popular vote, confess to liking caterwauling teenagers.
In my most recent novel, the protagonist is invited on Desert Island Discs and sends the whole thing up outrageously. I must say that, given the chance, it would be hard to resist the temptation.

Eight singles? Must be one of those British traditions... like blood pudding and haggis. I don't recall any of our "desert island book lists" here at LitNet limited to 8 short stories.

As for aging politicians confessing to liking music by "caterwauling teenagers"... which coming from Brian I will assume to mean pretty much any form of popular music that he himself doesn't like... I would think that most politicians today... unless they are ancient... grew up with some exposure to jazz, rock, and other forms of popular music.

The Desert Island Discs idea was thought up by Roy Plomley who was its presenter for many years until he died and he still receives an acknowledgement at the end of each programme.
Whilst I'm sure that the aforementioned politicians were exposed to popular music, I'm referring to 'pop music' which has a different connotation and usually consists of 'caterwauling teenagers' between the ages of 16 and 60.

Papayahead... that Nutcracker is an especially fiery one. Valery Gergiev and the Kiroz tear through the work at lightning speed. Seriously, it was an eye-opening performance for me... far removed by the usual slow saccharine and treacle-laden interpretations.

I have to admit that the two classical discs I listed are the only two I've listened too. Long while back around christmas time someone complied a review of books/music to help gift givers. The reviewers raved about the two aforementioned discs so I put them on my list. I like them both but honestly don't have anything to compare them too.

I would choose the following among my favored artists to accompany me if / when stranded on an island. With each selection, I have included a brief explanation as to why I chose the particular piece.

Classical
Any album featuring Antonín Dvořák, as long as it includes Humoresque, Serenade for Strings and New World Symphony.

“Humoresque”:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uB8mzdO3MnI

Why?...I would play Humoresque anytime that I am confronted by the island cannibals in hopes that it would ease the tension and pave the way to friendly dialogue:

Opera
The Who – “Tommy”

“Overature”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h9OrPq7lLpw&feature=related

…No better way to start the morning

Jazz

I’m not as well versed in Jazz, so I’ll go with a close cousin in “Big Band”, and choose Artie Shaw and his version of “Begin the Beguine”

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ps05TaQuYvc

…Perfect for miscellaneous chores, hut maintenance, etc.

Pop/Rock

The Who – Who’s Next
I’ll play “Won’t Get Fooled Again” anytime my mind wanders back to that double crossing a*s responsible for getting me in this predicament.

Oh and “Bargain” whenever I’m trading with the natives.

Country/Bluegrass

Anything from Bob Wills, although it is difficult to fit him squarely in the “country/ blue grass” category, but it is the closest of the choices.

“Steel Guitar Rag”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hxzxH6wIPCY&feature=related

….Perfect for collecting coconuts.

Merle Haggard “Swinging Doors”

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BxfgkDzL5Po

…when I’m gett’n liquered up on the occasional bottle that washes up on shore.

Folk

Burl Ives – “Wayfaring Stranger”

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S5sHrOTXX0s

….This will get through the monsoon periods stuck in my hut.

Rap/Hip Hop
N/A

Techno

Kraftwerk – “Showroom Dummies”

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iU3TgEuK-Ag&feature=related

…I’ll play this during those intimate moments with Betty, the Neiman Marcus mannequin that washed ashore a couple years back.

World Music/Ethnic

Brave Combo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=joYsWmVkUOU&feature=related

…I’m drawing a blank on how to apply this. Perhaps during those times when I reminisce over my Grandmother’s Kolache.

Other

Elmer Bernstein, theme to The Magnificent Seven”

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4l2Td-gBUw0&feature=related

…Played during my rescue as I run side by side with Yul Brynner, Charles Bronson and Steve McQueen, guns a-blazin holding the cannibals at bay as we sprint to the boat standing by in the surf.

Roy Plomley, who devised the first Desert Island Discs programme and presented it for 43 years, fell foul of Brigitte Bardot's exotic French acccent in the Seventies.

He asked the glamorous actress what she had chosen as her luxury item, to which she replied in her distinctive French accent: "A peeniss, "

Confused, Plomley pressed her: "'Most interesting," he said. "And why precisely, may I ask?"

"Well, " said Bardot. "It's what the world needs most - 'appiness."
