I'm having a hard time to tell the difference between high style and low style. Could anyone recommend me a book on diction analysis?

If you want to identify higher diction, ask yourself:

1. Does this sound like the author's natural voice? Many novice writers who attempt higher diction sound banal in their approach.

2. Do you notice a lot of polysyllabic words?

3. Is the writing colloquial? If not, it may be higher diction.
