I am trying to find the title of a short story I read as a child. It was in my English textbook in elementary school. (It wasn't part of the required reading, but I always read ahead in my book. I was that kind of nerd.) It's been about 20 years since I read it, so my memory may not be completely accurate. Here's what I remember:
A man is driving a car and enters a parking garage, a tower, looking for a spot. The garage is very full, so he ascends higher and higher looking for an empty spot. A while passes, he's still going higher and higher, and he is not sure how long it has been or how high he has gone. He finds himself no longer in the tower but driving on a highway. He is actually racing along at a very high speed, and he sees other cars in the other lanes of the highway, also speeding along. He's not able to make out what he is driving toward. I think it was like driving towards a mirage. At the last minute he sees that another car is in his lane traveling towards him. They are both going quite fast. He only has time to panic before they crash. Here the story ends.
Can anyone help me out with the title and/or author?
