Um, I'm guessing you want a dystopic novel for September, and not a comic novel for August?..So...

The Memoirs of a Survivor - Doris Lessing

A compelling vision of a disorietating and barbaric future from Doris Lessing, Winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature 2007. Many years in the future, city life has broken down, communications have failed and food supplies are dwindling. From her window a middle-aged woman - our narrator - watches things fall apart and records what she witnesses: hordes of people migrating to the countryside, gangs of children roaming the streets. One day, a young girl, Emily, is brought to her house by a stranger and left in her care. A strange, precocious adolescent, drawn to the tribal streetlife and its barbaric rituals, she is unafraid of the harsh world outside, while our narrator retreats into her hidden world where reality fades and the past is revisited!

I hate to rain on endgame's parade, but he only has 23 posts. Maybe some generous poster could re-nominate 451 for him. Or maybe, if we don't get five more nominations by the deadline (which seems likely), it could be let go. It's a wonderful novel, after all.

I had already nominated it, that's why it's included on the list.

Wow, I thought this would be a much more popular genre.

The forum book club in general seems to have gone way down in popularity in general, FifthElement. I don't know why. Then again, we already have 6 votes in this genre. Maybe the dystopian book will be a little more lively, activity wise.

You seem to be right Mutatis. I wonder why that is? Things tend to be a lot slower over summer, but the book club seems to be slow in general. I think I'll make a commitment to read the book this time whichever it is, although I've read both Fahrenheit 451 and Oryx and Crake before. They're both good reads. Maybe it needs some promotion. I'll put my thinking cap on.

I had to drop off due to work commitments in July - it's been really busy. I'm on hol now, and I hope to keep up with the reading.

I got Fahrenheit 451 for 99p in Smiths the other day, so I'm ready for that one. I'm not supposed to be buying new books, but what can one do? (I imposed that on myself, but I'm not sticking to it very well).

Well I'm ready. I've got the book. I've nearly finished the one I'm on. Things are hotting up for Fahrenheit 451!

Hmmm, what to do, what to do? Throw in a vote for Fahrenheit 451, a book I've already read but could read again, and all but guarantee its place as the winner? Or give a vote to Oryx and Crake, a book I've never read by an author I've been meaning to read for quite some time, and take away Fahrenheit 451's cushy lead? Choice, choices. . . .

Oryx and Crake and Memoirs of a Survivor are the only ones I haven't read. I like Atwood though, so I'll put a vote in for O and C.

Oh, man, I'm sorry Paul, but I just can't pass an opportunity to throw a wrench in the cogs like this. It's a chance a ****-starter doesn't get often. IT'S A TIE! :willy_nilly:

Though I would be willing to read Fahrenheit 451 having heard so much about it. I for one will not be sorry if Oryx and Crake wins. I love Atwood and haven't read this one of her's yet. Plus it has the advantage of being a book I already own.

No worries. I can't influence others' choices for my convenience. I'll try to get a copy of Oryx and Crake. I've not read any Atwood either, and so it's really a win win for me.

Paul, if Oryx and Crake wins I won't be reading it - not that it's not a good book, actually it's a very enjoyable book and I liked it very much - but it's a bit long and would interfere too much with me getting through the million-odd other books I've still got to read. The advantage to Fahrenheit 451 is that it's short!

If it wins, if you PM me your address I'd happily lend you my copy.

In the event that it doesn't win, if anyone still wants to read it the Guardian Book club (http://m.guardian.co.uk/ms/p/gnm/op/s34uVP1_OBG-ct8JLic5BJg/view.m?id=15&gid=books/2011/aug/22/reading-group-fahrenheit-451-ray-bradbury&cat=books) are reading Fahrenheit 451 as their inaugural read. Starts 5th September.

Yet another tie... Please vote and break the tie before I have to make a choice and impose my own choice on everyone!

You know those books that you have always meant to read but something always came up and supplanted it...and you continuously feel bad for not having read this book....that's Fahrenheit 451 for me....so I shall jump into the fray and end this tragedy in my life.
