I like anti-heroes. I like female protagonists. I would like books, tv shows, or movies (in that order) that are about anti-heroines. I'm indifferent to genre for the purposes of this question. I'd like the works to pass the Bechdel test, and in general not make me want to tear my hair out about sexism, racism, etc. Either well-written/acted or well-plotted is sufficient, though of course both is better.

Please no books that involve cats or other pets being killed. (Dying is okay, being killed to show how evil someone is, not.)

Carol O'Connell has a tremendously good series of mysteries featuring damaged and fascinating policewoman Kathleen Mallory. She's definitely an anti-heroine, but not like any other one. Start with the first, Mallory's Oracle, and read them in order for the best unpeeling of her character.

Vanity Fair. Becky Sharp's a wonderful anti-heroine.

Not so sure about books but Peta Wilson's Le Femme Nikita TV series might be up oyur alley. A lady forced to be a spy on do or die missions with zero tolerance for failure.
