Mystery has surrounded Ernest Hemingway's death ever since he took his own life fifty years ago.

But on the anniversary of his death, a friend has dismissed the rumours of personality disorder or depression having anything to do with why he shot himself.

Anyone who has been the subject of surveillance by a country's security service will find it a daunting experience and in Hemingway's case it might have made him suicidal. Hobnobbing with Castro would have automatically put him under suspicion; if you are going to sup with the devil you should use a long spoon.
