In an effort to get my head around
The way this ancient culture
And its fortune faced a turn-round
There's furore for the future

I'm not certain that seventy percent
Not paying taxes was wise
Can't really call it money well spent
Nor jobs that are otherwise

They blame it on graft and corruption
But it's deeper than politics
I'm not talking an elaborate deception
Too much party pick-up sticks

Can they pay their preposterous bill?
Why worry about it now sir?
They didn't pay it before - won't until
All time has passed - just defer

Now the question: What's a Grecian urn?
Not much these days chum
Nothing in the pot, no butter to churn

In the backgound a revolutionary hum...

I thought of Greece and I do like the quip What's a Grecian urn? despite it being a very difficult time for them atm.

I'm a fan of the last stanza and final line :)

... in other words, no more Grecian urn, not even Keats' ode, but a strong message and well crafted poem indeed!!

I love the subject matter and the sentiments expressed but the metre is off, not scanning well, which lets it down a bit. If you can tidy the rhythm it will be a killer of a ballad.

Best, H

Way back in the late 1960s there was an extemely popular
comedy show called Laugh-In (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rowan_%26_Martin's_Laugh-In) hosted by a comedy team called Rowan and Martin. The format of that pop culture "phenom" consisted of recurrent characters, quick-moving sketches, sight-gags, and "running" jokes such as "What's a Grecian urn?" ( the answer: "About a dollar and a quarter an hour.")

No wonder it was popular - I mean if they were filching my material how could it fail?
