I'm tossing some ideas around in my mind of trying to get published in an academic journal. I'm going to want to submit work to a literary journal, as I am most knowledgeable in that. I even have a particular journal in mind.

What is the proper procedure for writing research papers like this? What kind of topics are they looking for and would lean towards accepting over the others?

If anyone has knowledge or experience on this and can help me out I would be eternally grateful.

Surely if you know the journal you wish to be published in, you would have an idea of the topics they publish?

Expanding on what Delta40 said: First, and most obviously, go to the website(s) of prospective journal(s) and see what they say about what they publish. Most have specific guidelines for submissions as well as mission statements and other specifications about length, style, etc. Then, examine back issues of the journal or journals you might wish to submit to and see exactly what they have published. That should give you a pretty good idea of who might be interested in your work.
