This is the solution found -
a place to bury nightmares,
where civilization’s fingertips
thrust deep into the crust
to grip where tunnels grow.
In these, sarcophagi will lie,
their contents half alive
and radiant in darkness.

Quite possibly my favourite Hawkman moment. A nuclear horror story, terribly true. I particularly liked your play on the 'half life'.
I disliked sarcophagi on the first read but once the content became clear I switched sides. Great job, Hawk.

Like it, especially lines 3-5. Really good image.

Powerful. Honest. Profound.
Well done.
PS: "Radiant." Genius.

Thank you JB, hallaig and ea.
The thinking behind Onkalo is seriously long term. The contents will be active for hundreds of thousands of years, so they have to conceive a stratagy which will outlive civilization but still make it apparent that the site is dangerous to anyone who fancies digging there, when all thoughts of currently known languages will be forgotten. What symbols say 'Warning, Keep Out' to alien cultures that may come. What memory of that which lies beneath can possibly survive. Imagine if Stonehenge were a prehistoric nuclear waste dump, it intrigues us but it does not warn us away. We don't really know what it is. The same problem confronts those who made Onkalo.
Makes you fink dunnit!

A little research really made the difference in being able to appreciate this.
Hawk on top.
