The longing Johnny had been feeling recently was not new to him. It had always been a welcome, velvet warmth. When he was just a dash younger, it had been there, guiding him, making him impartial to shapes or colors. When he had learned how to listen to it, it urged him to be courageous; at other times it had shown him the beauty within a quiet stare. The feeling always brought a record scratch from the norm, filling him up with bright liquid gold; a quick glance here, a double take there, and excitement was introduced into his day-to-day grind. “Savage and superb” became the goal for his escapades. He is seriously playful, and this aloofness made him comfortable, yet kept him from understanding the gravity of his stands. He had always, though, been in control of his emotions; never too drunk, never raging, never too depressed, but he knew this feeling was powerful. Men throughout the ages had heard the voice that spoke many tongues, and through lessons of Punnett squares and patriarchy, he had found his justification for it. This desiring fury, this fluid, consuming, golden connection of angelic bodies, accompanied with his natural passion, became the way of asserting his power, his way of being accepted. He has known the beauty that surrounds many minds, and found the first sip of blossoming romance to be better than the second drink.

The strident euphoria of Urophagia?

I'm guessing it's about Johnny's marriage to "feeling as if he's deep into the zone". Or God granting his prayers of increasing gamma levels in his brain to supply him with the power to stay grounded in his perception of the reality around him without his past haunting him, contributing to his euphoria ("this fluid, consuming, golden connection of angelic bodies, accompanied with his natural passion,"), though its all in his head... which is a good thing.

...not that there's anything wrong with that.

This reader defers those kinds of judgments to people who are better at the Puzzle thread, Mark.

It's about poo

Could be right - if you substitute "Piglet" for "Johnny" it certainly adds a new frisson.

It's about the rush of having a one night stand- the animal lust and cravings, the chase, the chance, and the chicks.

Out of context - and I don't know the context - I would think its about the lure of drink, or possibly of jazz. With Johnny impressing me as a sympathetic, attractive character, yet one in for a serious fall. The setting is unquestionably midcentury. I love " "record scratch" from the norm."

Could this possibly be from "The Lost Weekend?"

I wonder if it is about being a peeping tom, he starts out small,
"a quick glance here, a double take there, and excitement was introduced into his day-to-day grind"
But soon seeks something more “Savage and superb” - spying on people having sex ?
