With summer here, and my mother on her summer break, she being a teacher, she proposed that we read a book in unison and then discuss it when we both finish. The only thing is I have no clue what book we would both enjoy. She doesn't read as much as she did so I'm totally unsure what book we could enjoy reading. I know finding a book to her liking without knowing what she likes in the first place is a hard task, but I was wondering is any of you have a great novel you think she and I would enjoy reading and afterwards discussing. Thank you.

Would you say A novel for I? So why change the grammar just because your mother is included? It's a very common mistake, but so easy to avoid. Take the other person out of the sentence and try it.

As for a novel...The Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane. Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms The Shipping News by Annie Proulx
Atonement by Ian McEwan The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler Humboldt's Gift by Saul Bellow for starters

Oh grammar, but thank you nonetheless for your recommendations, I'll surely look into them.

making the pronoun which follows being the object of a preposition. A more common error occurs when a pronoun is the subject understood. This is called an elliptical clause. "She is different than I." I is the subject of the verb am which is understood. Everyone makes grammatical errors once in a while, but they are important since they immediately telegraph your level of education.

I have frequently spotted this error in the speeches of Cabinet Ministers and other well known public speakers who, presumably, have had a good education.

Although your analysis is correct, when I taught English to British schoolchildren, I formed the impression that they were uncomfortable with the pronoun me and thought I sounded more proper and correct.

Recent novels I've enjoyed that you and your mom might enjoy reading together include Eventide by Kent Haruf and Three Junes by Julia Glass.

A few thoughts:
The Enchanted April by Elizabeth von Armin
I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith
Mr Golightly's Holiday - Salley Vickers

all great summer reads :)

The Little Prince or Animal farm. The drawback of these is length.

Who's teaching whom?

Not certain how to read your comment. I looked at my post and it is perhaps not clear that the second I in the sentence refers to the preposition [/I]. Not to me, the teacher.

You should really tell everyone a little bit about yourselves before asking for suggestions. I can list a few that I liked and think are ripe for discussion but I'm not sure how much help they'll be to you:

VALIS by Philip K. Dick
The Divine Invasion by Philip K. Dick
A Scanner Darkly by Philip K. Dick
Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World by Hakuri Murakami
To The Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf
The Waves by Virginia Woolf
Sir Gawain and the Green Knight by ?
Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy
