Bahadur Shah Zafar commented on human pessimism and fear of death:::
I asked for a long life,
Only four days were granted,
Two went in hoping,
Two lost in waiting.

It seems to be a statement about Being and Becoming. Instead of being, our minds are constantly preoccupied with becoming: what we can be, what we will be, what we might be, what we could be - and all the while we miss what it means to be truly alive.

The emperor's quote reminds me of a couple of pages Kierkegaard wrote about the man whose deathbed regret was: If only I had achieved my lifelong goal. The dreadful tragedy of his life lies in the truth that life must be lived in the present moment.
