The Island by Victoria Hislop.

This book has sold millions, won prizes and was voted "Best summer read" on Richard and Judy.

So let's see. We have a Cretan leper colony. A woman searching for her roots. Two sisters, Anna - flighty and flirty who marries the local landowner's son, and Maria the dependable one, who remains steadfast through incredible hardship...

Bored yet? I was.

This could have been good, the setting and scenerio showed promise, but it has no depth, emotions are delt with in cliches and the characters are straight out of soapland. I just couldn't bring myself to care about any of them.

Are there any good books being written today?

Ha, I have read this a few years back shame to admit (though it was for a 'popular' literature module so I have my excuses). Totally agree terrible book.
