I am leaving tomorrow
by carousel.
With black suit and case,
perched on a white plastic stallion,
patent leather shoes
tapping to the tune of the fairground.
I am leaving tomorrow
by carousel,
I guess
I will see you around.

I hope when you both meet the merry go round is your alternative mode of transportation.

Nice take on the "see you around" form of goodbye.

There is something really poignant about this poem. Maybe it's the regression, a lost childhood, or simply one's sanity leaving in a scene of total incongruity. But the ultimate irony is one never leaves in a carousel but only goes full circle and always ends up where one starts.

The playful quality in itself is very innocent and sweet. ok stop Jer, you're making me dizzy.

Jerry, though this reader reads you, he's at a loss with what to do with you.

Liked the cyclical nature of this.

Whenever someone makes any kind of artistic reference to a Merry go Round I indevitably think of Mark Gertler and his 1916 painting of the same title.

A different time with other preoccupations, but the analogy is universal I think. I like the considered understatement of your poem, JB.

I'm in agreement with Jack, in that I don't really know how to define your style Jerry. It's incredibly direct, contains a strong voice in your works and has produced many successful poems, including this one.

I laughed out loud at the ending, and agree with Haunted, it is poignant. The penultimate "I guess" was perhaps the most touching, as it accepted the resignation of going, as said above, full circle. It also suggests a repetition of sadness, as the carousel will repeatedly take the speaker through those emotions on the cyclical journey.

Excellent job.

I really enjoyed this compact poem.

Led to to see what makes patent leather, well, patent leather; and a few tidbits about carousels including:
In Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury, the carnival's carousel can cause riders to become younger or older depending on the direction in which they ride.
Carousel (1945) was a Broadway musical featuring hit songs such as "If I Loved You" and "You'll Never Walk Alone". The protagonist, Billy Bigelow, is a carousel barker.
In the dramatic climax scene of Alfred Hitchcock's Strangers on a Train (1951) the hero and the villain struggle on a carousel.
David Carradine's 1983 film Americana revolves around a Vietnam veteran's obsession with the restoration of an abandoned carousel.
The 1930s novelty song, The Merry-Go-Round Broke Down, is the theme song for the Looney Tunes series of cartoons by Warner Bros. - from wikipedia: carousel

thanks to you all for your comments. I have never seen that painting before Hawk, but I like it very much.

Jack and Ice. I am confused that you don't know what to do with me. Fundamentally, I am clueless to your issue.

Thanks Tailor. Some wonderful carousel associations.

Hold on tight haunted :)
