View Full Version : Graduation
The man of iron-plated heart
showed his first signs of rust, when,
as maroon caps and tassels were thrown overhead,
he shed a tear.

I don't know what to say about this. At first I'm thinking the brave, chivalrous knight but then achievement and finally emotion. Odd images yet over coffee, interesting enough to savour.

Are congratulations in order? I visualized a tough, hardened father watching his son at graduation...
Thank you both for reading. I was afraid this would sink to the bottom of the poetry section unnoticed.
EA pretty much got it right. I wrote this about my high school graduation, 6 days after the graduation occurred (June 2nd). And Delta, I'm taking your feelings as a quasi-success.
The iron (hard heart) being softened after a momentous achievement was the intention. It was both meant to illicit thought, and create a satisfactory moment, both of the achievement of the absent graduate, and the happiness of the onlooker (in this case, the man with the iron heart). It seems it was perhaps mildly successful.
Thank you both for reading.

well I certainly think you achieved what you set out to do. In more ways than one by the looks of it. Congratulations to you IceM xx

Hi, IceM.
It certainly deserved to be disinterred from the archive. When I read it I thought the iron-hearted man was a teacher...
I agree that it is an effective piece.

Congratulations. This wasn't bad reading by any means.
