Dropped into Devonian seas, held down by the flatlands,
the quail and the mountains of home mourn you,
remembering how you used to be.
You are too dangerous to be returned, even in death, Goyaale.
Yawning, you might swallow the oppressor, entire.

Hi hack. The title had me going for a minute, I thought it might be a lament for a more recent warrior, lost in the Oklahoma at pearl harbour. I was quite happy for you to take me on another journey, though still replete with dignity. Always a pleasure to read you.

Your poem has just taught me about who Goyaale was! The elegiac tone of your verse does more than mourn that great leader. It reminds of his ongoing power. Great to read you, Hack. Best from Bar

There is something about the unpretentious straightforwardness of the language that adds to this tribute, as if you would not let anything of your own personality or ego detract from the respect you wish to show Geronimo.

I agree with everything expressed above. The title was excellent, it seemed ironic until the immediate Devonian mention.

It creates a beautiful image of pre-historic antiquity and the seeming timelessness of the leader.

Somehow reminded me of an old Leo Kottke tune 'The Sailor's Grave on the Prairie'. An enjoyable read.

Thank you all for the reads. I was struck by the irony
of the Bin Laden raid being code named "Geronimo".
I have an affinity for his story. I was born and spent
my early youth in Cochise County, AZ, where he lived
much of his life. My grandparents came to that area
early in the 20th century and knew people who lost
family members to the, so called, Apache raiders.
He is presumed to be still buried at Fort Sill, Oklahoma.
There is an interesting, but probably false, account of
his remains having been disturbed by Skull and Bones
club members, most notably Prescott Bush, of the
presidential Bush variety. Geronimo is one of the last
hostages of the American Indian Wars. His remains
should be repatriated.
