It was the day the dragonflies came.
Marvelous mechanisms of iron and wood buzzing menacingly from beyond the mountain, dropping their black eggs on our village.
They cracked open and out grew the tendril plants, ankling and eating half of our population, the rest heading for the hills.
Those who cut their own or had their feet cut off were put in dogcarts.
But then there were the holes that opened in the ground, black chasms from nowhere swallowing many of our number, the slow footed and the no footed.
The cigarette birds swooped down from high in the jandarra trees, carrying away the weaker unfortunate members of the tribe.
We who survived the fate then had to confront the desert heat.
By the time we made it to the relative safety of the sulphurous cave we were down to only thirteen, many dying from exposure and thirst.
'Didn't mention anything about this in the brochure,' quipped the General, gasping for air. 'If it had I don't think I would have bought a ticket...'
