Well there is another volcanic eruption here on the ice and it has some affect on flight plans at least here. It is in Grímsvötn in Vatnajökull now and as I sit in my living room I am watching a brown sky. I am in no danger it is to far from me but the ash has it's affect on the capital and towns close by, like mine. this volcanic action here on the ice has had the 'fun' affect that we seem to have a new word 'tourist volcanoes' they say this one is not a tourist volcano like the one in Eyjafjallajökull last year, but they hope it will only last for a few days.

I at least hope so.

What does "tourist volcano" mean? Have you been to see the volcanoes when they are not erupting? They are rather fascinating.

Stay safe, Helga.

Indeed, but what does Eyjafjallajökull mean?

Indeed, but what does Eyjafjallajökull mean?

'eyja' means 'Islands' in the genitive plural case, 'fjalla' means 'mountains' in the genitive plural case, and 'jökull' means 'glacier' in the nomnative.

So, a literal rendering would be the 'glacier of the mountains of the islands' or 'Islands' mountains' glacier'. I suppose the most idiomatic way of rendering it would be 'Island-mountain glacier'

Anyway, glad you're not in harm's way Helga! I doesn't look like this eruption is going to be as bad as last year.

well there was a lot of ash last night and a few schools are closed and people should stay inside in some parts of the country mine is OK now but there is a lot of ash on the streets and I put a plate out last night, a bit to late though the ash had been pouring down and over for a while when I did but I took a picture of it this morning and it shows a little of the ash there is a lot more on my mailbox but it is more obvious on the plate.

Well, I guess it's good for tourism but it kind of sucks for you guys. I have fires around where I live, breathing in ashes isn't very nice.

The ash is much worse than it was last year and it is already having a very bad influence on the animal life, so many birds, fish and sheep's are dieing and they can't even get the sheep inside because they can't find them and they don't have room for them. I think that is the worst thing about this but it is slowing down a bit now and hopefully this will be over two or three days.

Keep us informed Helga. It's fascinating hearing about the volcano, though I hope it stops soon for you all.

Are you being effected by the fires near Slave Lake? That with the floods in Manitoba this year, it's been **** all around for natural disasters.

We've had major forest fires and hurricane force winds here in Britain recently. Coupled with earthquakes, volcanoes, floods and tsunamis all over the world, it's proving a rather disasterous year so far!

sounds like a lot is going on in the world these days. well this eruption is almost over and isn't causing much harm anymore, there is a lot of rain pouring down around the volcano and where the ash did most harm now and it helps out with the cleaning and stopping the ash from spreading more. But many sheep and lambs have died and the pictures of sheep who can't see anything cause their eyes are covered in ash.

I hope this will all be over soon, Iceland is not very popular at the moment and one guy from Norway was on the news and he wanted Iceland to disappear in the sea and never to rise again!

I have a flight in to Keflavik tomorrow, and the agent just said it's not cancelled. Great, I should be at Hemmi and Valdi or Cafe Rosenberg on Thursday!

Nah, our air hasn't actually been affected at all but as for daily life a lot of people's Slave Lake relatives came here and we've got a bunch of donation boxes n' stuff. Oh yeah, plus on May long weekend, we had a stupid fire ban so no one in the whole province could light a fire when they went camping. It was lame too, because it was also raining at the time so there were just a bunch of soggy people sitting in tents. Worst holiday ever.

Grande Cache hasn't had any disasters, which is kind of odd for this area. No gigantic forest fires, no snow storms in the middle of May, nothing.
