Why?

OK, Why can I only find creative writing courses on line, far as I can tell only college has it in my or near area it media creative. What hell happened to fiction, Poetry? I know jump gun because I did said that would not doing thing, until I know if got target grade which I am very doubtful that moment and when Charlotte is in senior school which reality is four year away. I would not be able to do it on line course due fact of I personal find it easy speaker to someone face to face special when I am taught. Also I do not think would be acceptable. Plus I have element of dyslexia, it would take great number of phone calls and probably software. Or I am just find excuses not to doing on line creative writing course?

Hi, Zoolane. This is something i have been "researching" in my city, which is in south yorkshire. I have found that looking on advert boards in cafe's, Shops and post offices usually reveals alot of unkown activity within a city; writers trying to get reading and literature groups together, english students looking for community supprt via a study group that is open to non-students. My city has it's own community forum, which i have heard (i don't use it) is very useful for people who use it.

What kind of software do you think you would need. I find a program called Inspiration very useful, it is for mindmaps and flow charts. it is a lightweight program but very useful.

Zoo,

Have you asked at your library if there are any local writers' groups in your area? There are usually several 'amateur' groups who meet once a month to read each others' work and offer feedback. They also often have guest writers to run half-day workshops in things like humorous fiction, journalism, or whatever.

You might even find there are local Creative Writing courses available close to where you live (night classes for example) run by a professional writer living in the same area looking for a little extra earnings.

I live in the wilds of North West Scotland more than 100 miles from the nearest city yet I've been on two 8-week courses organised by a local poet and about half a dozen workshops. Joining a local writers' group will help you make contacts and find out what's on in your area.

And don't worry about your experience or ability - it's all about belonging to a group who encourage each member and are happy to share the good and the bad. It might also convince you how imaginative and original a writer you really are.

Good luck

I think you have misunderstood my suggestions. i was giving advice on how to possibly get into study groups that meet up; usually they leave notices with phone numbers and adresses in postoffices, shops etc, so you can contact them and get some groups going.

and the city forum is used as a way to find and meet with people to enjoy common interests and activities with, such as walking, photography, biking etc..

I joined a creative writers group comprised of sweet elderly pensioners. My interest for writing developed from there. I would urge you to look locally. These informal groups are less pressure than a course and are very social.

I also live in a very rural area and there are writing groups here and there. I found one in a coffee shop. There may also be a local literary magazine or even a newspaper that could point you in the right direction.

You tried a community college? The one in my city offers creative, fiction, poetry, science fiction and novel writing courses. It's a start, and a good place to network and branch off to outside writing groups. Attempts for a club have been tried at my school but nothing so far has stuck.

I suggest you try and find a couple like-minded people and start your own writing group if it's that hard to find. There are many around where I live near Portland, but maybe it's because it's Portland.

Zoo, if you cannot get into a writer's group then I know this will still not stop you from writing. Its in your blood and if you have to turn in on yourself to do it, so be it.
Good luck.

I just come a across this website had quick look but yet nothing within my area. The groups that are available sound great but bit to far out of my way.

I am going contact someone through to ask fews questions. Maybe send 1-2 poems and short story.

Hello,

Please could provide me with link to Natalie Boxall or a email address. I look for some advice on creative writing and also could help me find a local writing group run authors or amateurs with East Middlesbrough Area.
Thank You.

Hope you get a positive response... of course, you could always put an ad in the local library/post office/newsagents asking if there are any other writers in the area who would like to meet up to chat and compare notes. That's how writers' groups start off.

Well - that's exactly what I've just done. We started 6 weeks ago. I already belong to a larger group that meets on the second Saturday of each month, but many local writers who would like to attend that are unable to due to other weekend commitments.

So far it has been great fun - meeting twice a month (although when our enthusiasm wanes it might be once each month).
If you want something doing badly enough - do it yourself.

You could start one. The group I went to was started through ads in the local rag and the shire newsletter. The library allows the group to meet weekly at the library. Word of mouth can be very effective too.

Are we to assume you have a thing against writers' groups?

Beware - we have your name. We know where you live... :flare:

Try an ad in your local free paper inviting anyone interested in forming a group to contact you; it's unlikely they will charge you for something of this sort as it is supporting a worthwhile community activity.

Nice thread! I'm also trying to find courses and groups of people like the ones mentioned in the past comments! Thanks for this!
