Together we growl
Singly, we are subdued.
Loneliness gnaws my heart
like a chewed dog toy
lost in a tangle of weeds.
While you think there are no
memories to be had
in our backyard,
I creep through the holes in your defence
wearing my maternal patchwork quilt
and dare to open the door.
The rusted wheelbarrow
entombed in poison ivy,
reminds me how often
we have carried each other.
Bottles of calamine lotion later,
my legs still itch from
the oily sap of your love.
