Joan of Party
Joan had always been a smart girl. She was a strong student with few social flaws. Most of her time had been spent studying for school. But the big day came when she finished school. She thought herself ready to change the world, she even considered leaving her small town for a third world country, possible even a ghetto in a major city and even joining the military. The decision she made was to take her education and aspirations and apply them in a big city. She thought she could have more impact by influencing the people that had a large voice, she pursued the Big Apple.
Joan's drive and dedication were easy to notice in the town she had been from. But upon arriving to New York City she realized that it wasn't going to be enough to get noticed or even talked about. Her apartment wasn't much more than a converted slum meeting existing building codes in the most cost effective way. It wasn't a place to invite people over to or a space that could hold more than herself, her alternative to being at home was working. Despite her education she took a job working as a server in a luxurious hotel. She made sense of her situation by reasoning that if she can't influence people she can at least see what interests people in their free time.
Feeling alone and craving different attention she started navigating the nightlife. Her hours after work were suitable for meeting the partygoers that enjoy the afterparty more than the obligatory work party. She was quick to learn the difference between people with flash cash and people with a purpose. Her attraction to people with a purpose was naively obvious. Her first friend was named Henry. He was a regular at the hotel parties and liked talking. Joan's first impression of Henry was "How can a man have so many good ideas and so much bad luck?" The two paired up after Joan decided to interrupt Henry as he was wasting his time on a companion server. Henry had been saying "how can this place have such great taste but few tasteful drinks?" Joan interrupted saying "the drinks give people something to talk about, it helps the customers feel better about themselves knowing that they have better taste than the executive director of drinks at our hotel." Joan had finally met someone who reminded her what being the smart girl was like and how great the feeling from positive attention was.
Henry got Joan some work at an office doing advertising. Joan had a voice and a company that amplified her voice. Some of the work was for advertising things like beverages and alcoholic drinks but she reveled in the fact that her messages were out there for the world. Henry and Joan started attending work parties together, she'd invite Henry to her merchandise release parties works and Henry would invite Joan out to see some of the new places opening in the city. Henry was a party planner, he planned large events for 500+ crowds.
Joan received an invitation from Henry to a new country club away from the city. The country club reminded Joan of the town she had grew up from, except everything was conveniently closer and had a look that committed to an overall design. The welcome party was lavish and the entertainment varied from exotic animals to professional atheletes. There wasn't an attraction that people wouldn't want to pass up. Henry got Joan a meeting with the acquisitions tester for the country club and he was hoping she'd impress him with her ability to convey messages, in the hopes she'd get a high profile client. The meeting was a success and Henry reported back to Joan about all the good things that were spoken of her. Henry said "the manager was intimately interested in you." Joan frozen with terror and unable to betray her emotions her face became pale, she silently waited for Henry's next words. Henry said "Joan you don't have to give me an answer now but would you consider the offer?"
Alone and silent in her room Joan had thought "why would Henry even think of me in that way?" Upset and angry she decided that she had made a mistake. She questioned what her friendship with Henry was and why she didn't consider a situation that went as wrong as the one that had just passed. The phone in the room rang and it was Henry. Still disgusted at herself she answered the phone to hear what he had to say. Henry said "Joan lets talk about what happen, I didn't know what to do when he told me that, I have a career and reputation, the last thing I wanted to do was to give people something to talk about. I only told you because these are what some people in our business are like. I had to tell you then so people could see how you would react."
Joan didn't want to continue listening to him over the phone, instead she wanted to hear him in person. Unwilling to go back out there she asked him to come to her room so she could see how he reacts to what she has to say. Henry opened the door and entered her room.
...
The next morning Joan awoke in her room and felt hurt, she saw herself bruised and cut. She feared the worst about the events that had passed, events that she could not recollect. She remembers being upset and angry and then inviting Henry to her room.
...
Years later Joan smarter than ever had been working in the adult entertainment industry. At a conference she gave an award winning speech dedicated to her customers, fans and fellow business competition saying "I was a rape victim, I was approached by a friend and a co-worker who betrayed my trust for sex. The videos I create are to spread ideas and inform people about what sex is and what it is not. My videos are successful because they are x-rated romances from a woman's perspective not some macho-inflated version of what a man thinks sex is. It is no mistake that most of my customers are women, women that want to see men that hard to find, both literally and figuratively. I dedicate this award to the women that always wanted to see what a good time is like without having to suffer the burden of its side effects."
