Hello all. I am a novice writer. Due to some encouragement I am writing about the city of Bell scandal (yikes, I was in the middle of it!) I am fascinated by the "free indirect style/discourse." Works magically with fiction, guiding the reader seamlessly into the story. The question: Can this style be used in non-fiction? I see it as problematic but what a challenge! I joined this forum to ask tis question!

That would be the problem. Using the device in non-fiction writing would set the narrator above what he was writing about; thereby diminishing the importance of the narrative and calling into question the reliability of the narrator.
