Hey,

I was just wondering if any of you listen to hip hop?

I'm a big fan myself. Sure, I realise that the bulk of modern hip hop seems to revolve around guns, drugs, *****es and money... But there are a lot of talented artists around too. I have to admit, though, that I also like gangsta rap that seems to promote violence, sexism, homophobia, racism... However, there's lots of conscious hip hop out there that focuses on social issues. I prefer to listen to these artists because I can relate or understand their message but I can't bring myself to discard gangsta rap classics.

Anyway, let me know what you think about hip hop. Do you listen to it? Do you hate it? Or simply don't understand it? Share some of your favourite artists.

Right now I'm listening to The Coup a lot, Dead Prez, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Brand Nubian and the Pharcyde, to name just a few.

I've been looking for female MCs as well. Akua Naru and Jean Grae have captured my interest. They're doing their thing in male dominated misogynist world.

I hate Hip Hop these days. It's all the same, trite and unoriginal cack.

But I do like talented acts like Public Enemy, Jurassic 5 and Clipse.

The closest I've come to listening to hip-hop, or rap, is Rage Against the Machine, whom I love.

I quite like Kid Cudi, not sure if he is considered hip-hop per se, but his songs are very good - of course he also has one or two commercial songs, but the majority of his songs are dam good.

I grew up with hip hop, but I've never paid very close attention to it. K'naan and k-os can be pretty good. Early Lupe Fiasco wasn't bad either, latest album kind of meh. Underground stuff I've never gone out of my way for.
