Ladies! Ladies! I know you are out there. You know who you are; the ones who read books in a ladies-only book club. I have a book to suggest that all your club members will enjoy and take something away after reading the book. This book will allow you and your friends to experience a stimulating conversation over your glass of wine and cheese.

The Lost Summer of Louisa May Alcott by Kelly O’Connor McNees is a novel that blends fact and fiction of the summer of 1855 about Louisa May Alcott’s life during that summer at the age of twenty-two. McNees suggests that Louisa may have experienced a real love affair that she based-on the character of Laurie from Little Women. The book explores such themes as feminine independence, freedom from propriety and family expectation, and seemingly Protestant oppression. I will say that the book is engaging and had me turning pages, although I knew what would come to pass in the end. The conclusion is somewhat sad, as Miss Alcott achieves success as a writer, but has little else in her life. On this point, you have to read the story and decide with your book club friends, was it worth giving up everything to achieve success as a writer?
