Hello,

I'm looking for a book that my father used to read to me when I was young. It was a collection of short stories and poems. I believe it was called "Good Times Through American Literature". Some of the things I remember was 'He killed the noble Mudjokovis" "the elephant who tried to use the telephant" "who's on first", etc.

If anyone knows the exact title, author and how I might be able to purchase this book I would truly appreciate it. I would like to give it to him for his birthday.

Thank you :)

I have not found the book.

I have found...

--the exact names of the poems are Eletelephony by Laura Richards and The Mudjokivis by George A Strong.

--The Home Book of Verse -- Volume 1 by Burton Egbert Stevenson contains poems by both, but neither of the two poems you listed.

--There exists a Home Book of Verse -- Volume 2 and Home Book of Verse -- Volume 3. The contents of these can be viewed with a simple google search and a little sifting. There is no index, so I haven't found out whether the poems in question are or are not in either of these volumes.

Hopefully this give you a direction you can pursue.

Do you mean Mudjekeewis, from Hiawatha? if you can pinpoint that, just look up for all places the book has been printed in, and you can find it that way.

I believe you mean A Nonsense Anthology.

Thank you all for your help, but I still haven't found the book. It also had a story in in about a beating heart and "who's on first". I am so sad that it is this difficult to find. I have searched online for days. :(

Well I have a hunch. Is it possible your father may have read to you out of a school text? For many years the school textbook publisher Scott Foresman had a secondary school series called America Reads. The title of the 9th grade book was Good Times Through Literature. Main editor was Robert C. Pooley. Your title is not exact, and that may be why a search didn't bring it up. You can find several copies of this available on used book sites such as ABE or Amazon used. I don't think it's available new anymore. Of course like any school text the condition is often poor. I hope this isn't too late for your father's birthday.
