What effects do you personally believe literature has had on gender roles and racial issues. Is literature a catalyst for societal changes? I personally believe the media is a larger catalyst, but what arguments would you make for literature?

It has the same effect as some pretty flowers.

Even tangible literature struggles to incite deep passion within the reader.

Only impassioned leaders and large numbers elicit great social change.

Literature used to have a bigger societal effect than it does now, because of the cultural changes brought about by technology. Reading/writing used to be the way people learned and thought about human truths, and societies gradually changed partially because of them. Now I think that catalyst, like you mentioned, has become other sorts of visual and auditory media, a la TV. This is sad to me, because I think we make less educated/thoughtful decisions on what to believe this way. Reading, to an extent, forces you to comprehend and digest information more than TV.
